During  this Arabic beginners’ course at the University of Groningen Language Centre, you will expand your knowledge of the Arabic language and culture. We teach Standard Arabic (MSA), the form of Arabic that is used and understood across the Arab world. The main focus of the course is on communication in everyday situations. You will develop your conversational skills by discussing topics such as family, studies, and hobbies, and gradually become more confident using this beautiful language.
Who is this course for?

This course is intended for learners with a CEFR level A1 in Arabic. This means that you can understand basic sentences, talk about simple everyday topics and read and write Arabic script. During the course, you will work towards achieving an A2 level. The course is taught in Arabic as much as possible, with explanations provided in Dutch or English when necessary. The course materials are in English,it is important that you have a good command of English in order to participate fully in the course.

What will you learn in this course?

During the course, you will develop your language skills through:

  • Expanding your vocabulary related to daily life
  • Using basic tenses more accurately
  • Describing people, places, and events
  • Taking part in longer, clearer conversations
  • Expressing simple opinions and preferences
  • Improving your listening, reading, and writing skills

The course consists of 12 lessons. The on-site lessons last 2 hours while online lessons last 1.5 hours.

How many hours of independent study are required?

To keep up with the course, you should expect to spend approximately 30 hours on self-study in total. Each week, you are expected to work through the lesson materials, learn and practise vocabulary, complete grammar exercises and pay sufficient attention to developing your listening and reading skills.

After completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Take part in everyday conversations with greater confidence
  • Describe your daily life, family, studies, or work more clearly
  • Talk about past experiences and simple future plans
  • Understand short texts, messages, and conversations on familiar topics
  • Write short paragraphs about personal and everyday topics
