Have you always wanted to learn Arabic? The beginners’ Arabic course at the University of Groningen Language Centre introduces you to the Arabic language and culture. We teach Standard Arabic (MSA), the form that is spoken and understood across the Arab world. You will get to know the Arabic script and culture and start learning basic words and phrases. We will practice everyday conversations, such as in a restaurant, on the street, or during a chat with an acquaintance. This will help you quickly get by in Arabic!
Who is this course for?
This course is for beginners of Arabic. During the course, we work towards CEFR level pre-A1. The course is taught in Arabic as much as possible, with explanations provided in Dutch or English depending on the group participants. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English in order to participate in the course.
What will you learn in this course?
The course consists of 12 lessons. A lesson lasts 2 hours in an on-site course and 1.5 hours in an online course. During the course, you will learn, among other things:
- Reading and writing the Arabic script
- Vocabulary
- Short sentences
How many hours of independent study are required?
You should expect to spend a total of 30 hours on independent study in order to stay on track with the course. Each week, you are expected to go through the lesson material, learn and practise the vocabulary, complete the grammar exercises and pay sufficient attention to your listening and reading skills.
What will you be able to do after the course?
- Read and write in Arabic
- Explain who you are, where you live, and where you come from
- Greet people
After successfully completing this course, you will be ready for the follow-up course Arabic pre-A1>A1.
