Would  you like to advance your knowledge of Mandarin to the pre-intermediate level A2? In the Chinese A1>A2 course at the University of Groningen Language Centre, you will continue learning Standard Chinese (Mandarin). You will expand your vocabulary and improve your ability to read and write the Chinese script. During the lessons, we will practise conversations about health, leisure, holidays, and travel. We will also discuss current events in China, and you will learn about cultural customs and daily life in different parts of the country!
Who is this course for?

This course is for beginners of Chinese. During the course, we work towards pre-intermediate CEFR level A2. The course is taught in Chinese as much as possible, with explanations provided in Dutch or English depending on the group participants. The teaching material is in English. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English in order to participate in the course.

If you are unsure whether this level is right for you, you can make an appointment for the online consultation to get personal advice from our teacher.

What will you learn in this course?

The course consists of 12 lessons of two contact hours, during which the following topics will be covered:

  • 300 new words and expressions, including common verbs and nouns.
  • More complex sentence structures and grammar, such as complements, serial verbs, and modal verbs.
  • We also focus on pronunciation (tones), character recognition, and improving your reading skills.
How many hours of independent study are required?

You should expect to spend a total of 40 hours on independent study in order to stay on track with the course. Independent study consists, for example, of learning the Chinese characters, their pronunciation (pinyin), and their meaning. You will also complete assignments from the course book. These consist of writing tasks and grammar and vocabulary exercises.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • Hold longer conversations about topics such as your health, leisure, holidays and travel.
  • Write short texts.
  • Do your shopping in Chinese.

In addition, you will have gained insight into the Chinese language and culture and you will know more about daily life in different parts of China.
