Do you already know some Japanese but find kanji difficult to remember? Or are you unsure how to read unfamiliar kanji? In this six-week course, you won’t just learn new kanji—you’ll learn how to crack kanji: how to deduce the meaning and pronunciation of unknown characters and how to remember them more effectively.

During the course, you’ll actively work with a variety of learning strategies to recognise, read, and memorise kanji. You’ll apply these strategies through exercises and short, everyday Japanese texts, allowing you to discover which methods work best for you.

This course is made possible in part by the Japan Foundation.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for learners with a basic knowledge of Japanese at CEFR level A1 or higher. It suits multiple levels because the focus is on learning different strategies rather than memorising a fixed list of kanji. No prior knowledge of kanji is required.

Depending on the group’s composition, the course will be taught in Dutch or English, while Japanese examples and exercises will, of course, be provided in Japanese.

Not sure if this level is right for you? Book an online consultation to receive personalised advice from the instructor.

What will you learn during the course?

Over six interactive two-hour lessons, you’ll engage with Japanese kanji through varied exercises, such as:

  • Kanji and memory games
  • Strategies for recognising, memorising, and reading kanji
  • Reading short and everyday Japanese texts
  • Exercises to deduce the meaning and pronunciation of unfamiliar kanji
  • Activities to develop your own memory strategies
What does self-study involve?

To keep up with the course, expect to dedicate a total of 18 hours to self-study. This may include completing assignments given during the lessons, practising the recognition, memorisation, and reading of kanji, and independently applying the learning strategies covered in class.

What will you be able to do after the course?

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Recognise common patterns and components in kanji
  • Use various strategies to memorise kanji more effectively
  • Make informed guesses about the meaning and pronunciation of unfamiliar kanji
  • Use context to better understand unknown kanji and vocabulary
  • Read short Japanese texts with greater confidence
  • Develop your own approach to learning and reviewing kanji
