Would you like to learn Dutch? With this Dutch beginners’ course from the University of Groningen Language Centre, you will learn the basics of the Dutch language. During the language course, you will learn how to speak Dutch in various situations, such as at the market, in the cafeteria at work or school, in a café, or in a restaurant. This course not only makes communicating with colleagues easier but also provides you with the opportunity to get to know other UG staff members!

At the Language Centre, you will learn Dutch at a fast pace with the help of teaching methods we developed ourselves. Our language courses focus on speaking and understanding the Dutch language. This way, you will quickly start to feel more or less at home with the language, and you naturally expand your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Who is this course for?

This course is intended for UG staff members who do not speak Dutch yet. During the course, we work towards CEFR level A1. The course is taught in Dutch as much as possible, with explanations provided in English when necessary. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English in order to participate in the course.

What will you learn in this course?

In this intensive course, you will be engaged in learning Dutch for a full week in small groups of eight people maximum. The course comprises 10 lessons, divided over five days. Every day, you will have two lessons: lesson one is from 9 – 11 a.m. and lesson two is from 1 – 3 p.m. In between lessons and after the second lesson, you will work independently. This is possible in the classroom where the lesson took place but you can also go somewhere else. During the course, you will learn, among other things:

  • The alphabet
  • Pronunciation: sentence accent, word accent, and ending sound
  • Creating and using sentences that express a command
  • Plurals and adjectives
How many hours of independent study are required?

Self-study consists of reading texts, studying vocabulary, preparing and reviewing grammar exercises, and making and correcting assignments. Take into account a time investment of at least forty hours during the course week. Once the course has ended, it is important to regularly repeat and practise the teaching material.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • Introduce yourself
  • Talk about your relatives and friends
  • Buy groceries at the market
  • Order food and drinks at a restaurant or café

After successfully completing this course, you will be ready for the follow-up course Dutch A1>A2 for UG staff.
