If you have followed a Language Centre course to attain level B1 in the past, but your Dutch is not quite up to par yet, this course is right up your street. It revisits the most important topics between levels A2 and B1, and extra attention will be paid to oral fluency, vocabulary and grammar.
Who is the course for?

This course is intended for anyone who has previously followed a Language Centre course to attain level B1 but has not quite mastered the Dutch language to this level. You can only sign up for the course if you have completed the Nederlands in actie textbook in one or more previous courses.

What will you learn in this course?

The course consists of 12 lessons of two hours each, during which you will learn:

  • to create complex sentences, for example, passive sentences and sentences with relative clauses
  • a lot of new words
  • grammar, such as verb tenses and how to use the word ‘er’
  • to improve your pronunciation

In addition, you will define your own focus points at the start of the course. This could be anything from remembering words better or applying grammar rules to speaking more fluently.

How many hours of independent study are required?

If you want to keep up with the course properly, you will have to invest about 30 hours in total in independent study. Independent study will mainly entail preparing for lessons, such as studying vocabulary, reading texts and explanations, and completing oral and writing assignments, to which your teacher will provide individual feedback.

Given that you have previously used Nederlands in actie, the focus of independent study will be different for everyone. The website that goes with the Nederlands in actie textbook offers a lot of possibilities for repeating and expanding the course material, and your teacher can give you tips for extra learning material if necessary.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • participate in conversations with colleagues and acquaintances about familiar topics, if your conversation partners bear in mind that your Dutch proficiency is not yet very high but sufficient to deal with clear situations
  • read a newspaper, magazine, or news website without too much trouble
  • write an email or short text, if it does not have to contain any important formal information
  • keep up relatively well when listening to Dutch conversations, the radio, or podcasts, if the topics and vocabulary used are sufficiently familiar or properly introduced, and/or if there is another form of support available.

After successfully completing this course, you will be ready for the follow-up course Dutch B1>B1/B2.

Course material

We will use the Nederlands in actie textbook, supplemented with extra course material that the teacher will provide. You can only sign up for the course if you have completed Nederlands in actie (2022 edition or newer) in one or more previous courses.

The atmosphere during the lessons was very fun and pleasant, making mistakes did not feel uncomfortable at all. Also, the teacher made the topics we covered very interesting!
