Would you like to deepen your knowledge of Japanese? This Japanese language course offered by the University of Groningen Language Centre is intended for students who already have a good command of the basics of Japanese at level A2 and want to improve their language skills to the intermediate level B1. You will learn to communicate on a variety of topics, such as travel, leisure, health, work, and intercultural situations. We will also discuss cultural differences and manners in various contexts in Japan.
Who is this course for?

This course is for participants at a pre-intermediate level of Spanish at CEFR level A2. During the course, we work towards level A2/B1. The course is taught in Japanese as much as possible, with explanations provided in Dutch or English depending on the group participants. The teaching material is in English. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English in order to participate in the course.

You should also be able to read Japanese characters because we will basically use only those in this course. These are mainly the hiragana and katakana characters, but also some basic kanji characters. You do not need to be able to write the characters.

If you are unsure whether this level is right for you, you can make an appointment for the online consultation to get personal advice from our teacher.

What will you learn in this course?

The course consists of 12 lessons of two contact hours, during which the following topics will be covered:

  • Learn more kana and a broader set of kanji in context.
  • Understand and use more extensive sentence structures.
  • Use formal and informal language.
  • Apply more complex grammar, such as compound sentences and causative-passive forms.

The course takes a communicative approach, with a strong emphasis on speaking and listening. You will also reflect on cultural customs and your own language use.

How many hours of independent study are required?

You should expect to spend an average of 4-5 hours of self-study per week, during which you will:

  • Prepare the material from the Rikai and Katsudou books.
  • Listen to Marugoto's audio material (available online).
  • Analyse reading texts and complete grammar exercises.
  • Prepare speaking tasks and learn vocabulary.
  • Practise reading and writing kanji and kana independently.

Active preparation is essential to get the most out of the lessons.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • Have more complex conversations, for example about your preferences, experiences, and future plans.
  • Give and compare opinions in social and professional situations.
  • Understand longer listening texts on familiar topics with a limited number of unfamiliar words.
  • Read texts such as blog posts, brochures, emails, and short dialogues on everyday and intercultural topics.
  • Depending on your ambitions and progress, you can also prepare for the JLPT N4 or N3.
