Have you always wanted to learn Japanese? The Japanese course for beginners offered by the University of Groningen Language Centre introduces you to the Japanese language and culture. Our Japanese teacher will teach you your first Japanese words and phrases. We practice with conversations in everyday settings, such as in a restaurant, on the street, or a conversation with an acquaintance. This way you will soon be able to get by in Japanese!
Who is this course for?

This course is meant for beginners in the Japanese language. During the course we work towards CEFR level A1. The course is taught in Japanese as much as possible, with explanations provided in English or Dutch depending on the composition of the group. The teaching material is in English. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English in order to participate in the course.

What will you learn in this course?

The course consists of 12 lessons of two contact hours, during which the following topics will be covered:

  • Making simple sentences with 'desu' (to be)
  • Verbs in masu form (also -masen ka, -mashoo)
  • Vocabulary
  • Present tense

Check out an overview of the exact material you will cover during this course here.

How many hours of independent study are required?

You should expect to spend a total of 30 hours on independent study in order to stay on track with the course. Self-study consists, for example, of expanding your vocabulary using a vocabulary list provided by the teacher or the Quizlet self-study sets.
In addition, you will receive a writing or speaking assignment every week, and you can deepen your knowledge of grammar by watching explanatory videos.

Learning to read the Japanese hiragana and katakana characters is not taught during the lessons, but it is of course a lot of fun to do this yourself! Moreover, you need to be able to read the Japanese characters if you want to continue learning after this course in our Japanese A1>A1/A2 advanced course. We recommend using self-study apps for this, such as Kana Mind and HIRAGANA / KATAKANA Memory Hint. You can also practise using our self-study sets on Quizlet.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • Introduce yourself
  • Have a conversation about food and order something in a restaurant
  • Ask for directions
  • Talk about your weekend and your plans for the week ahead
  • Invite someone over

After successfully completing this course, you will be ready for the follow-up course Japanese A1>A1/A2.
