Plan a consultation
A consultation is required to enroll in this course. During the consultation, we will assess whether your current level of Dutch proficiency and your expectations align with the course. Please contact Jeroen van Engen to schedule a consultation.
The intensive course consists of four days with lessons in the morning and afternoon. During the course, you will learn more about teaching practices, higher education, and academic culture, with a special focus on the University of Groningen. We will also discuss current issues in university education, such as the role of English and Dutch in higher education.
In addition, this course takes a practical approach: you will practise parts of your lectures, receive feedback from lecturers and colleagues, and attend mini-lectures given by colleagues from the University of Groningen and other universities. The lessons focus on specific language skills required for lecturing, such as presenting, facilitating debates and discussions, giving instructions, providing and eliciting feedback, making and confirming agreements.
This will enable you to expand your academic language skills within a short period of time and learn about the expectations of lecturers and students. You will receive a lot of personal feedback, as the course is taught in a small group of 6 to 12 participants. The course is taught by a team of highly experienced international colleagues who are experts in academic language and culture and have worked at various universities in the Netherlands and abroad.
This is an intensive course in which your own lectures play a key role, and you will spend most of your time preparing and practising them. Self-study also includes preparing texts and learning and revising vocabulary.
During this course, we will make use of materials provided via Brightspace.
