As a healthcare professional, do you often interact with German-speaking patients and colleagues and are you sometimes faced with language barriers during these interactions? The Medical German training course offered by the University of Groningen Language Centre will enable you to prevent miscommunication when taking a patient’s medical history or when consulting with colleagues. In six lessons, we will address common situations in healthcare, so that you can improve your communication with German-speaking patients and other healthcare professionals in a targeted way.
Who is this course for?

This course is for doctors, trainee specialists, and foundation doctors with a preintermediate level of German at CEFR level B1. The course is taught in German as much as possible, with explanations provided in Dutch or English depending on the composition of the group. A good command of English is therefore important in order to participate in the course.

If you are unsure whether this level is right for you, you can take an online placement test. Alternatively, you can make an appointment for an online consultation to get personal advice from our teacher.

What will you learn in this course?

The Medical German training course consists of six two-hour lessons, during which we will do exercises on the topics below. This way, you’ll improve your speaking skills through real-life scenarios and expand your medical vocabulary related to clinical presentations, medical treatments, and anatomy. We’ll also focus on structural words and grammatical constructions that you’ll frequently use in these contexts.

  • Admission and discharge interviews, the basics of taking the medical history
  • Medical history per specialism
  • Physical examination and other examinations per specialism
  • Post-surgery, morning rounds, medication, advice, patient discussions
  • Dealing with emotions and expectations, cultural differences
How many hours of independent study are required?

To get the most out of this course, you should plan on a total of about fifteen hours of self-study. Self-study includes, for example, preparing for an admission interview in which you can ask both open-ended and closed questions, listening to audio clips, and completing exercises to expand your medical vocabulary. If you are preparing for work or a programme of study in a German-speaking country, or if you are planning to take the Fachsprachprüfung, you can also practise writing in this course. In that case, plan on an additional hour of preparation time per week.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • On completion of this course, the communication between you and your patients and colleagues will improve significantly.
  • You will have gained a broad and specific medical vocabulary.
  • You have practised scenarios to help you ask the right questions when taking a medical history, delivering bad news, or discussing diagnostic procedures, and you can explain treatment options in patient-centered language.
  • You have gained a better understanding of cultural and other differences in healthcare in the Netherlands and Germany.
