As a healthcare professional, do you often interact with German-speaking patients and colleagues and are you sometimes faced with language barriers during these interactions? The Medical German online training course offered by the University of Groningen Language Centre will enable you to prevent miscommunication when taking a patient’s medical history or when consulting with colleagues. In five lessons, we will address common situations in healthcare, so that you can improve your communication with German-speaking patients and other healthcare professionals in a targeted way.
Who is this course for?

This course is for doctors, trainee specialists, and foundation doctors with a preintermediate level of German at CEFR level A2/B1 or higher. The course is taught in German as much as possible, with explanations provided in Dutch or English depending on the group participants. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English in order to participate in the course.

If you are unsure whether this level is right for you, you can test yourself online using the placement test! Alternatively, make an appointment for the online consultation to get personal advice from our teacher.

What will you learn in this course?

The Medical German training course consists of five two-hour online lessons, during which we will do exercises on the topics below. This way, you will improve your speaking skills in real-life situations and expand your medical vocabulary on topics such as the clinical picture, medical treatments, and anatomy. We will also consider the grammar that you will often use in regard to these topics.

  • Admission and discharge interviews, the basics of taking the medical history
  • Medical history per specialism
  • Physical examination and other examinations per specialism
  • Diagnosis and treatment/surgery per specialism
  • Postoperative care, morning rounds, medication
How many hours of independent study are required?

You should expect to spend a total of 10 hours of independent study in order to stay on track with the course. Independent study comprises, for example, preparation for an admission interview, during which you can ask both open and closed questions, and exercises designed to expand your medical vocabulary.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • On completion of this course, the communication between you and your patients and colleagues will improve significantly.
  • You will have gained a broad and specific medical vocabulary.
  • You will have experienced real-life situations that will enable you to ask the right questions when you take a medical history, communicate bad news, or carry out diagnostic procedures. You will also be able to explain treatment options in a patient-oriented manner.
