At the Language Centre, you will learn Dutch at a fast pace with the help of teaching methods we developed ourselves. Our language courses focus on speaking and understanding the Dutch language. This way, you will quickly start to feel more or less at home with the language, and you naturally expand your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
Online Dutch 0>A1 is intended for anyone who does not speak Dutch yet. During the course, we will work towards CEFR level A1. The course is entirely taught online on Brightspace, the online learning platform of the University of Groningen. Therefore, it is important that you have a reliable internet connection and well-functioning video and audio settings.
Reimbursements
Unfortunately, there are no reimbursements available from DUO or the University of Groningen (UG) for the Online Dutch courses. Please have a look at our course offer for civic integration candidates or for UG students, PhDs and postdocs.
Course schedule
You will have access to the online self-study module for ten weeks, with one of our teachers guiding you for eight of those weeks. To stay on track with the course, you should expect to dedicate 8-10 hours per week to self-study, following the course schedule. Each week, you will receive the schedule for the upcoming week. This includes information about planned self-study, speaking and writing assignments, and any tests and group sessions.
Self-study
Self-study involves reading and listening to dialogues, learning new vocabulary, studying grammar, and completing exercises with answers that you can check. You will receive individual feedback from your teacher on weekly speaking and writing assignments that you can work on with a fellow course participant.
Guidance
There will be no weekly classes in this course, but there will be three or four short interactive group sessions with the teacher and a few classmates via Skype, where you practice your speaking skills. The online sessions will be scheduled in consultation so that you can participate from any time zone. We also provide an online discussion forum where you can collaborate with fellow course participants and ask questions to the teacher.
After successfully completing this course, you will be ready for the follow-up course Online Dutch A1>A2!
During this course, the first half of the book Nederlands in gang is covered. You will need to purchase this book yourself.
This book also comprises an individual login code for a website containing additional exercises, listening fragments, videos, and songs. You will need this code to be able to actively participate in the course. You can also purchase the code separately from the publisher Coutinho.
Three times a year, we launch our free online beginners' course Introduction to Dutch. This three-week self-study module introduces you to the Dutch language and culture, as well as to the city of Groningen. This course is ideal for getting a taste of Dutch before starting one of our group courses!
