Would you like to learn the Dutch language even better, whenever and wherever you like? With the Online Dutch course A2/B1>B1 from the University of Groningen Language Centre, you will continue learning the Dutch language. You do not have to commit to a time and place because the course mainly consists of self-study. Nonetheless, you will receive guidance from our teachers during a few online sessions, and you will collaborate with other course participants on speaking and writing assignments!

At the Language Centre, you will learn Dutch at a fast pace with the help of teaching methods we developed ourselves. Our language courses focus on speaking and understanding the Dutch language. This way, you will quickly start to feel more or less at home with the language, and you naturally expand your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Who is this course for?

Online Dutch A2/B1>B1 is intended for beginners of Dutch at CEFR level A2/B1. During the course, we will work towards level B1. The course is entirely taught online on Brightspace, the online learning platform of the University of Groningen. Therefore, it is important that you have a reliable internet connection and well-functioning video and audio settings.

Test your level
Are you unsure if this level is suitable for you? You can easily test your language level online with the placement test, DIALANG test, or the ‘Self-evaluate your language skills tool’! You can also make an appointment for an online consultation to receive personal advice from our teacher. This consultation is not mandatory for the Online Dutch courses.

Reimbursements
Unfortunately, there are no reimbursements available from DUO or the University of Groningen (UG) for the Online Dutch courses. Please have a look at our course offer for civic integration candidates or for UG students, PhDs and postdocs.

How is the course structured?

Course schedule
You will have access to the online self-study module for ten weeks, with one of our teachers guiding you for eight of those weeks. To stay on track with the course, you should expect to dedicate 8-10 hours per week to self-study, following the course schedule. Each week, you will receive the schedule for the upcoming week. This includes information about planned self-study, speaking and writing assignments, and any tests and group sessions.

Self-study
Self-study involves reading and listening to dialogues, learning new vocabulary, studying grammar, and completing exercises with answers that you can check. You will receive individual feedback from your teacher on weekly speaking and writing assignments that you can work on with a fellow course participant.

Guidance
There will be no weekly classes in this course, but there will be three or four short interactive group sessions with the teacher and a few classmates via Skype, where you practice your speaking skills. The online sessions will be scheduled in consultation so that you can participate from any time zone. We also provide an online discussion forum where you can collaborate with fellow course participants and ask questions to the teacher.

What will you learn in this course?
  • 'Te' + infinitive use
  • How to use passive sentences and irregular verbs
  • To make and use sentences with ‘er’ and ‘zou’
  • More about pronouncing words according to colloquial speech
What will you be able to do after the course?
  • Read a Dutch newspaper, magazine, or news website
  • Participate in conversations with friends and acquaintances
  • Write an email or short text

After successfully completing this course, you will be ready for the follow-up course Online Dutch B1>B1/B2!
