This Publishing in English academic writing course of the University of Groningen Language Centre will focus on publishing your research papers and, in particular, the academic writing skills needed to publish in English. Attention will be paid to writing conventions and processes, sentence and paragraph structure, appropriate language use, and publishing considerations. By the end of this course, you should be able to be more flexible in creating an appropriate publishable text and demonstrate the ability to recognize and work on proper structures.
Who is this course for?

This course is intended for PhD participants with an advanced level of English at CEFR C1. You will receive personal feedback during these lessons as you will be taught in a small group of no more than 12 course participants. As a PhD student in this course, you are expected to be able to use the current research paper you are working on or will be working on for the course assignments.

Check your writing level
We would like you to write a text of approximately 400 words explaining your research topic to a general audience. This way, we can determine if this course is given at an appropriate level for you. In order to obtain a true idea of your writing skills, please do not submit text that has been revised, edited, or written with AI tools. Upload your text of approximately 400 words here.

What is the study load of the course?

The course comprises five lessons of two contact hours plus a 30-minute individual conference. You should expect to spend a total of at least 12 hours of out-of-session independent study in order to stay on track with the course.

During the course, you will be expected to apply the writing principles covered to your own research paper that you will have been working on during the duration of this writing course. Your classmates and instructor will provide feedback on these texts.

The four requirements of this course for a participation certificate include attending at least four out of the five contact sessions, a 1000-word draft version of a section of your paper, a 500-word peer-review version of another section of your paper, a second 1000-word draft version of another section of your paper, and the individual conference meeting.
