We are offering Receptive Dutch courses specifically for international members of consultative participation bodies at the University of Groningen. In these courses, you will develop reading and listening skills in Dutch up to an advanced level and gain insights into the Dutch meeting culture. In this way, we will help you participate more successfully in meetings in Dutch.

The course is part of the CoRe project, a research project of Utrecht University in which two PhD students and a postdoc carry out research into multilingual meetings and receptive Dutch learning. This means that by enrolling in this course, you consent to participate in the research. Among others, this means that the lessons will be recorded for research purposes. 

Who is this course for?

This course is intended for international UG students and staff who are members of consultative participation bodies, such as the University Council, faculty council, or programme committee. You have at least an intermediate level of Dutch, equivalent to CEFR level B1. In the course, we will focus exclusively on receptive skills in reading and listening, helping you develop your reading and listening skills towards C1 level. To take part in the course, solid English language skills (C1) are a prerequisite.

Plan a consultation
A consultation is mandatory for enrolling in this course. During the consultation, we will assess whether your current level of Dutch proficiency and your expectations align with the course. Contact Jeroen van Engen to schedule a consultation.

What will you learn in this course?

The course consists of 16 lessons of 2 hours each. During the course, you will learn more about the Dutch meeting culture and administrative language, and you will develop reading and listening skills for multilingual meetings. In this second part of Receptive Dutch, we will cover the following themes:

  • Language policy
  • Working at the University
  • Finance

It is important to know that you will not practice Dutch conversational skills as part of this course. In this course, we will make use of Lingua Receptiva: communicating in two different languages in a way that allows mutual understanding. For this course, this implies that the teacher will speak Dutch and the participants will speak English, similar to how it may occur in meetings. Extra attention will be paid to the development of your reading and listening skills, and you will learn how to efficiently switch between Dutch and English.

How many hours of independent study are required?

In order to properly keep up with the course, you will have to take into account two or three hours of self-study per lesson. Self-study may involve preparing texts, as well as learning and repeating the vocabulary.
