Are you an absolute beginner eager to learn Russian? This online Russian course of the University of Groningen Language Centre will provide you with a basic knowledge of the Russian language. We will introduce you to the Cyrillic script and teach you how to pronounce it correctly. In addition, you will learn more about Russian culture, and explore aspects of Russian and Russophone culture that are aligned with your interests.
Who is this course for?

This course is for complete beginners of Russian. During the course, we work towards CEFR level A1. The course is taught in Russian as much as possible, with explanations provided in English when necessary. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English in order to participate in the course.

What will you learn in this course?

The course comprises 12 lessons of 1.5 online contact hours, and during the course you will learn:

  • The Russian alphabet
  • Numbers up to 100
  • To read and write in Russian
  • The present and past tenses
  • And more!
How many hours of independent study are required?

You should expect to spend a total of 30 hours on independent study in order to stay on track with the course. This involves, for example, completing exercises from the course material, learning and repeating words, or writing a text using expressions you have learnt in class.You will also apply the language in real life by reading articles, watching video blogs with subtitles, etc.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • Greet people and introduce yourself and others.
  • Order food.
  • Talk about simple everyday activities.
  • Read and write simple texts.
