Do you already speak a Slavic language or have you ever dabbled in Ukrainian on a language learning app? Put your knowledge to use by learning Ukrainian at the University of Groningen Language Centre and discover contemporary Ukrainian culture in a group of like-minded language enthusiasts and a native Ukrainian teacher!
Who is this course for?

This course is for beginners of Ukrainian with CEFR level pre-A1. During the course, we work towards level A1. The course is taught in Ukrainian as much as possible, with explanations provided in English when necessary. The teaching material is in English. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English in order to participate in the course.

What will you learn in this course?

The course consists of 12 online lessons of 1.5 contact hours, during which you will:

  • Revise the Ukrainian alphabet and sounds
  • Learn and revise the basics of Ukrainian grammar: gender, key noun cases, verb aspects and tenses, cardinal numerals
  • Learn more about Ukraine and its contemporary culture
How many hours of independent study are required?

You should expect to spend a total of 50 hours on independent study in order to stay on track with the course. This involves, for example, completing exercises from the course material and learning new vocabulary.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • Hold a simple conversation in Ukrainian
  • Talk about yourself, your family and your city (discuss places, events, and give directions) 
  • Understand simple texts, and audio and video files on everyday topics
  • Write and read in Ukrainian
