Are you a native speaker of German looking to take your Dutch to a higher level? In this language course offered by the Language Centre of the University of Groningen, you will be challenged to speak Dutch even better! This course is suited for those who have completed the course Dutch for native speakers of German A2 > A2/B1. You can also enroll if you understand Dutch and can handle everyday situations. We focus on the specific challenges for German speakers at this level. This way, you will discover the differences and similarities between German and Dutch. Expand your knowledge of Dutch with this language course!

At the Language Centre, you will learn Dutch at a fast pace using teaching methods we developed ourselves. Our language courses focus on speaking and understanding the Dutch language. This way, you will quickly start to feel more or less at home with the language, and you will naturally expand your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Who is this course for?

This course is intended for native speakers of German with a pre-intermediate level of Dutch at CEFR level A2/B1. During the course, we will work towards level B1. The course is taught as much as possible in Dutch, with explanations provided in English when necessary. It is therefore important that you have a good command of English to participate in the course.

The course is openly accessible to everyone: UG students, UG staff, and external parties! Full-time international students, PhD students, and postdocs of the University of Groningen can take these Dutch courses at the Language Centre at the expense of the Board of the University of Groningen. Plan a consultation
Have you not taken a Dutch course at the Language Centre before? Then it is mandatory that you first arrange a consultation with one of our teachers. 

What will you learn in this course?

The course comprises 12 lessons. Each lesson lasts two hours in a course on location, and 1.5 hours in an online course. During the course, you will learn, among other things:

  • 'Te' + infinitive use
  • How to use passive sentences and irregular verbs 
  • To make and use sentences with ‘er’ and ‘zou’
  • More about pronouncing words according to colloquial speech
How many hours of independent study are required?

You should expect to spend a total of 30 hours on independent study in order to stay on track with the course. This involves, for example, reading texts, learning vocabulary, and completing grammar and writing assignments.

What will you be able to do after the course?
  • Express agreement/disagreement with something or someone 
  • Respond to a discussion partner
  • Give advice
  • Understand written and spoken texts on current events 

After successfully completing this course, you will be ready for the follow-up course Dutch for native speakers of German B1>B2!

During this course, we will use the following book. You will need to purchase this book yourself:

    B. de Boer, M. van der Kamp en S. Pentermann
    ISBN: 9789046908426 (4th edition | 2022)

This book also includes an individual login code for a website containing additional exercises, listening fragments, videos, and songs. You need this code to be able to actively participate in the course. You can also purchase the code separately from the publisher Coutinho. This is necessary when you purchase a second-hand copy of the book.

Please note: due to the frequent use of illegal digital versions of this book, participants of the on-site course are required to purchase the paper copy of the book. Digital versions are not allowed. If you had already purchased a legal e-book for a previous course, please email your teacher before the start of your course to report that you have a digital version. A check will be performed during the first lesson to establish whether it is a legal version. If you are taking an online course, a legal e-book is allowed.
